Pentair Priming Failure: Pump Won't Prime

A Priming Failure alert on a Pentair IntelliFlo pump means it ran its priming sequence and gave up without ever pulling water into the volute.

medium severity

Applies to: Pentair IntelliFlo VS, IntelliFlo VSF, and IntelliFlo3 VSF variable-speed pool pumps

What it means

Variable-speed pumps like the IntelliFlo run a timed priming routine every time they start from dry: spin up, try to pull water past the impeller, and confirm flow within a set window before ramping to normal operating speed. When that window closes without the pump ever registering flow, the drive stops the motor rather than let it spin dry indefinitely, and the display reports a Priming Failure. The drive itself will typically pause and retry a few times on its own before it needs a person to step in, so seeing this once right after topping off the pool isn't unusual — seeing it on every start is what points to something actually blocking suction. Running a pump dry for any length of time is hard on the mechanical seal, so the fault is worth taking seriously even when it clears itself.

Likely causes

All three causes below share one thing in common: air or a blockage somewhere between the skimmer and the pump basket, rather than anything electrical.

What you can check yourself

Go through these in order — each one rules out a cheaper, more common cause before you get to the ones that need a professional.

  1. Top off the pool water level if it's below the skimmer
  2. Clean the skimmer and pump strainer baskets
  3. Check the pump lid O-ring for wear and reseat it with lubricant if needed
  4. Confirm suction valves are fully open before clearing the fault and retrying
Call a professional if…

If the basket, water level, and lid seal all check out but priming still fails, suspect an air leak in the underground suction line and have a professional pressure-test the plumbing.
