Hayward Pool Heater & Pump Error Codes

Hayward's residential gas heaters and its variable-speed pumps use two different display systems, which is why the codes below look nothing alike. The H-Series heater line (H150FD through H400FD, in FD, FDN, and FDP variants) shows a short two-letter diagnostic code on its front keypad — LO, IF, CE, and so on — the moment the control board detects a fault in whatever it was checking. The TriStar VS, Super Pump VS, and EcoStar variable-speed pumps instead scroll a short plain-English message across their LED display, like "Priming Failure" or "Drive Overheated," because the drive electronics can describe the fault directly rather than encode it. Both systems exist to do the same job: tell you which safety check failed before you have to guess.
How to read the display
On an H-Series heater, the code appears alone on the small display where the temperature normally sits, sometimes alternating with the set temperature every few seconds. It stays up until the underlying condition clears or you power-cycle the heater at the breaker. On a VS pump, the LED ring or text display typically prefixes the message with "Drive Error!" or "Check System:" — that prefix isn't a separate code, it's just how the drive flags that what follows is a fault rather than a normal status message. In both cases, write down the exact text or letters before you reset anything; it's the fastest way to jump straight to the right page below instead of troubleshooting blind.
