Pool Error Codes

Raypak Pool Heater & Pump Error Codes

Every documented Raypak fault code, what it means, and whether it's a DIY fix or a call for a technician.

Raypak's residential lineup splits into two very different control systems, and that matters for how you'll read a fault. The Digital ASME and low-profile gas heaters (the 106A-406A series and similar models) use a three-letter alphabetic code on the LCD display — things like PRS, HL1, or IGN — paired with a flashing "SERVICE" indicator. The Crosswind and Crosswind V heat pumps run on a different control board entirely and report faults as a letter-plus-number code such as E3, since a heat pump's failure modes (refrigerant pressure, defrost, compressor protection) don't map onto a gas burner's ignition and combustion safeguards. This page covers every Raypak code that's been verified against manufacturer documentation, across both product lines.

How to read the display

On a Digital ASME or low-profile heater, a fault shows up as the word "SERVICE" flashing on the LCD along with a short code in the lower-left of the display — that code is what you're looking for below. On a Crosswind heat pump, the control panel shows the alphanumeric fault code directly rather than a separate "service" flag. In both cases, the code itself is the starting point: don't clear it repeatedly hoping it goes away on its own, since a code that keeps returning is the equipment telling you the underlying condition hasn't actually been fixed.

Every Raypak code

Digital ASME & low-profile gas heaters

CodeMeaning
PRSLow water pressure — flow not confirmed at the heater
HL1High limit 1 tripped — primary overheat safety switch
HL2High limit 2 tripped — secondary overheat safety switch
IGNIgnition failure — no flame detected after three attempts
ILOIgnition lockout — heater stopped retrying after failed ignition
SNSTemperature sensor malfunction — reading out of valid range
ROLRollout switch open — flame or heat escaped the flue path
BD1Board failure — main control board didn't start up correctly
FFLFalse flame signal — flame detected when the valve should be closed

Crosswind heat pumps

CodeMeaning
E3Flow fault — filter pump not confirmed running or providing flow

Not sure what's causing it? Start with the symptom

If you haven't matched a code yet, or the heater is behaving strangely without a clear code showing, these cross-brand symptom pages walk through the behavior itself:
