Raypak E3: Crosswind Heat Pump Flow Fault
E3 means the Crosswind heat pump's pressure switch hasn't confirmed that the filter pump is delivering adequate flow.
A Raypak Crosswind isn't a gas heater, so when it throws E3 the flow problem behind it looks a little different from a gas unit's PRS code, even though the underlying idea is the same. Crosswind and Crosswind V heat pumps rely entirely on the pool's own filter pump for circulation — there's no separate pump built into the heat pump itself — so E3 is really the heat pump asking a simple question: is the filter pump actually running and moving enough water right now?

What it means
Flow fault — the heat pump's water pressure switch hasn't confirmed that the filter pump is running and providing adequate flow. Because the Crosswind depends on your existing filtration system rather than its own dedicated pump, this code is as much about your pump's schedule and filter condition as it is about the heat pump hardware itself.
Likely causes
- Filter pump not running or scheduled off when the heat pump calls for heat
- Dirty filter (sand, cartridge, or DE) restricting flow
- Closed or partially closed valve to the heat pump
What you can check yourself
- Confirm the filter pump is running whenever the heat pump is calling for heat
- Backwash a sand filter, or clean/replace a cartridge filter (especially one over about two years old)
- For a DE filter, scrape the grids and recharge with fresh DE
- Confirm valves feeding the heat pump are fully open
If pump run time and filter condition both check out but E3 continues, have a technician test the pressure switch and check for a partially blocked line.
