Display Blank or Won't Turn On
A completely blank display is a different problem than an error code — it usually means the control board never finished powering up, so there's nothing yet for it to show.
What's usually going on
Most of the time, a dark display traces back to power never reaching the board at all: a tripped breaker, a GFCI outlet that's tripped at the pad, a disconnect switch left in the off position, or a blown internal fuse. In that state there's no code to look up, because the electronics haven't gotten far enough into their own startup to display anything — the absence of a code is itself the clue, not a sign the equipment failed to diagnose something. Two documented faults sit right next to this territory, though. Raypak's BD1 covers the case where the main board's processor is receiving power but fails to start up correctly — the closest thing in this dataset to an actual named code for "the board won't boot." And Hayward's CE, normally filed under communication errors, can present the same way on some units: when the display board and main board lose their connection to each other, certain failure points leave the front panel dark, frozen, or garbled rather than cleanly showing "CE" (see the dedicated communication error page for more on that fault specifically).

Checks that apply regardless of brand
- Confirm the breaker feeding the equipment hasn't tripped, and that any dedicated disconnect switch or GFCI outlet at the pad is actually on and supplying power — worth ruling out before assuming a board has failed.
- Do a full power cycle at the breaker for at least 60 seconds, then watch closely for anything appearing on the display at all, even briefly.
- With power off, open the control compartment and reseat the connector between the main board and the display or keypad board.
- Check for obvious moisture, corrosion, or a burnt smell around the boards — if you find any, don't keep re-powering the unit until it's inspected.
If the breaker and disconnect are confirmed on, a full power cycle brings nothing to the display, and there's no visible moisture problem you can fix by reseating a connector, the main control board has very likely failed to boot and needs a technician to test and replace it. A board that won't complete its own startup can't be revived by resetting it again and again.
