Communication Error Between Control and Display
The link between the equipment's brain and whatever you're reading it on has dropped — and depending on what kind of unit you have, that link is a cable, a keypad connector, or a Wi-Fi signal.
What's usually going on
Heaters and pumps fail this way for slightly different reasons, because the "display" means something different on each. On a gas heater like Hayward's H-Series, the front keypad and display sit on their own small board, wired to the main control board by a ribbon cable — if that connector works loose, corrodes, or gets damp from moisture in the control compartment, the two boards stop talking and the heater can't confirm settings or show status correctly. On a variable-speed pump, the "display" is usually the keypad on top of the motor, wired to the drive electronics underneath, and the same kind of loose or damaged internal connector causes the identical symptom. Pumps add a second path to this failure: if yours is linked to a home automation system or Wi-Fi (Hayward's OmniLogic/AquaConnect, Pentair's IntelliConnect and similar), the pump can just as easily lose its connection to the router or controller instead of anything inside the pump itself — worth ruling out before you open the unit at all.

Checks that apply regardless of brand
- Do a full power cycle at the breaker — this alone clears a surprising share of transient communication errors on both heaters and pumps.
- With power off, open the compartment and reseat the connector or cable between the boards (heaters) or the internal keypad-to-drive connector (pumps).
- Look for and dry out any visible moisture or corrosion around those connectors before restoring power.
- If the pump is networked to Wi-Fi or a home automation system, confirm the router is online and check that the low-voltage automation wiring hasn't been chewed, pinched, or corroded.
If reseating the connection and a full power cycle don't clear the error, or the compartment shows signs of water intrusion, have a technician test the boards directly. A communication error that keeps coming back usually means one board — or the connector between them — needs replacing, not just another reset.
