Pentair Communication Lost: Pump Signal Drop

Communication Lost means a Pentair IntelliFlo pump's keypad or automation link has stopped talking to the drive board — not that the motor itself has failed.

low severity

Applies to: Pentair IntelliFlo VS, IntelliFlo VSF, and IntelliFlo3 VSF variable-speed pool pumps, including units connected to IntelliConnect/Wi-Fi or automation

What it means

This one's easy to mistake for something worse than it usually is, because the pump can go completely unresponsive — no display, no reaction to button presses, sometimes still spinning at whatever speed it was last told to run. That's because Communication Lost is about the data connection, not the power or the motor: either the local keypad has stopped hearing back from the drive board, or, on pumps wired into EasyTouch, IntelliTouch, or a Wi-Fi-connected controller, the automation side has lost its link to the pump over that connection. The motor can keep running right through a fault like this; what's actually gone is the ability to see status or send it a new command. It's also the one Pentair pump fault most likely to come and go on its own, since a brief Wi-Fi dropout or a momentary glitch on the RS-485 line can trigger it without anything actually being broken.

Likely causes

Where the actual break is depends on whether the pump talks to a physical keypad, a networked automation panel, or both.

What you can check yourself

Start with the simplest possibility — a stale connection — before assuming a wire or connector has actually failed.

  1. Power-cycle the pump at the breaker
  2. For Wi-Fi-connected pumps, check that the home router is online and the pump is within reasonable range
  3. If automated, confirm communication wiring to the controller isn't damaged
Call a professional if…

If the fault persists after a power cycle and the network/router is confirmed fine, the drive board's communication circuit likely needs professional testing.
