Raypak ROL: Rollout Switch Open
ROL means combustion flame or heat escaped the normal flue path instead of venting outside, tripping a dedicated safety fuse.
ROL is one of the more serious codes a Raypak heater can show, and it's worth treating it that way rather than reaching straight for the reset button. Unlike a flow or ignition code, rollout means the fire itself briefly went somewhere it isn't supposed to go — spilling out of the burner compartment instead of drawing up through the flue — and the switch that caught it is a physical thermal fuse sitting right where that heat would land.
High severityApplies to: Raypak Digital ASME and low-profile residential gas pool/spa heaters
What it means
Rollout switch open — a thermal fuse or rollout switch tripped because combustion flame or heat rolled out of the normal flue path instead of venting properly. It exists specifically to catch flame that isn't drafting correctly up and out of the heater, which is a combustion-quality and venting problem rather than a simple mechanical one, and it's the kind of fault a homeowner shouldn't try to reset their way past.
Likely causes
- Blocked or restricted heat exchanger or flue passages
- Soot or debris buildup from incomplete combustion
- Venting problems causing flame rollout, including downdraft conditions
What you can check yourself
- Turn the heater off and do not attempt to reset or restart it yourself
Flame rollout is a combustion and carbon-monoxide safety issue, not a DIY fix. Shut the heater down and have a licensed gas technician inspect the heat exchanger, burners, and venting before it's run again.
