Hayward's own error-code documentation actually splits overheat protection into more than one specific fault — separate entries exist for the drive's internal components running hot and for the heatsink itself overheating — which reflects how a variable-speed drive is really two things bolted together: a traditional motor and a bank of power electronics that convert incoming AC into the variable frequency the motor runs on. Those electronics generate their own heat and need airflow across a heatsink to shed it, independent of anything the motor is doing mechanically. When that heatsink can't dump heat fast enough, whether from blocked vents, still air, or a struggling motor drawing more current than normal, the drive shuts itself down rather than let internal temperatures climb into failure territory.
It's worth knowing that older single-speed Hayward pumps handle the same underlying problem completely differently: their motors rely on a built-in automatic thermal overload protector that simply cuts power on and off as the motor heats and cools, with no display to explain why the pump keeps stopping and restarting. A VS drive's Drive Overheated message is doing essentially the same protective job, just reporting it explicitly instead of leaving the owner to notice a pump cycling on its own. That's worth remembering if you're used to an older single-speed pump — a VS pump naming the fault outright isn't a sign it runs hotter or fails more, it's just more forthcoming about what its protection circuitry is doing.

What you can check yourself
- Turn off power, let the motor cool for at least 30 minutes, then clear the fault
- Clean dust and debris from the motor's cooling vents
- Improve airflow around the pump (remove enclosures, add shade if it sits in full sun)
- With power off, spin the fan/shaft by hand to check it turns freely
If the vents are clear, airflow is reasonable, and the shaft turns freely but the pump keeps overheating, the motor bearings or drive electronics likely need professional inspection.
