Heater or Pump Keeps Tripping the Breaker
A breaker trip happens upstream of the equipment's own electronics, so most of the time there's no error code at all — just a dead unit and a breaker sitting in the off position.
What's usually going on
A breaker or GFCI trips on a genuine overcurrent or ground fault, and it does that fast enough to cut power before the control board can react to anything or log a code — so finding a codeless, dead unit right after a trip is completely normal, not a sign the equipment's diagnostics missed something. What an electrician looks for behind a real trip is one of a handful of things: a short developing in the motor windings, a ground fault from moisture that's worked its way into a junction box or the motor housing, wire insulation that's degraded over time, or simply too much load sharing one circuit. Two documented codes sit adjacent to this territory without being the trip itself. Hayward's AC Voltage High/Low flags incoming supply voltage outside the pump drive's acceptable range — a supply-side problem that can also be what's straining a circuit toward a trip. Pentair's Over Current is even closer: it's the drive itself detecting the motor pulling more current than it should and shutting down on its own, often before a breaker would ever need to.

Checks that apply regardless of brand
- Note whether the trip was a one-time nuisance — during a storm, say — or something that keeps happening; that distinction changes what comes next.
- Reset the breaker once. If the equipment then runs fine with no code, it may genuinely have been momentary.
- With power off, visually check that the wiring at the electrical disconnect box looks tight, undamaged, and free of corrosion.
- If you can safely and comfortably access it, confirm the pump shaft or impeller isn't jammed — a seized motor draws excess current and can trip a breaker on startup.
A breaker that trips more than once — especially one that trips again the instant it's reset — points to a real short or ground fault, not a fluke, and shouldn't be reset repeatedly. Have a licensed electrician measure actual supply voltage and check the circuit, and have a pool professional inspect the motor if a jam or bearing failure is suspected. Forcing power back onto a genuinely faulted circuit risks a fire.
